TO OUR READERS

As 2008 comes to a close, the snow is here, and another early season is over, it's now time to have some fun. Now that holiday crowds and light snowpack will soon be behind us, here at Bad Boy Sodas we're looking forward to a mid-season full of powder, parks, and pranks. We also look forward to hearing from you, our readers. We enjoy your input and commentary, and hope to be not only entertaining, but also a source of information for those coming to and those from Utah. We have no allegiance to a certain resort, we just like you, love to ride. So let us know if you have questions or commentary and we will try to be as helpful as possible. Also as the New Year begins we will be adding more bloggers, video, and website updates. So check back often and enjoy. We hope all of you have a Happy and Snowy New Year

SANDY REI "Know Before you go clinics" (FREE)

Know Before You Go: Avalanche Awareness
Just like students in Hawaii learn about the dangers of rip tides and shore breaks at an early age, students in Utah need to learn about avalanches. Join the experts from the Utah Avalanche Center as they address this critical need for basic avalanche education. This evening will include a narrated video showing avalanches, people triggering avalanches and the destructive power of avalanches. Then a local professional will tell their story about close calls or accidents they have had as they learned about avalanches. This will be followed by a Powerpoint presentation about the basics of how to recognize avalanche terrain, recognize obvious signs of instability, safe travel practices, the basic of avalanche rescue equipment and self-rescue procedures, and where to obtain information about current avalanche conditions, this program is tailored for younger outdoor enthusiasts between middle school and college, though all ages and Families are encouraged to attend.

VIDEOGRASS SITE IS UP

In what is being called the Holden/Ashbury movie, Videograss, a new snowboard movie production company, will be filming a flick this year. Their site is up and will provide an interesting look into the antics, experiences, and places involved in snowboard filming. With riders like Nick Dirks, LNP, Louif Paradis, and others expect this to be similar to the old kids know movies. Here is a clip from Burning Bridges, the kids know productions movie from '05, enjoy...

AVALANCHE DANGER

Another person died IN-BOUNDS snowboarding today at Jackson Hole Resort.  This years snowpack has proven deadly yet again.  PLEASE be careful if you are going out into the backcountry.  Since the west had little snow until a few weeks ago, the feet upon feet of snow piling up has been sliding.  For those of you in Utah, a good resource to check before heading out is the Utah Avalanche Center.  These guys work hard to keep everyone up to date on the conditions in Utah, and do a great job in offering workshops and seminars for those interested.  They also do a lot of fieldwork found on their youtube page, another way to become educated through learning and not experiencing.  Stay safe and remember to be careful even in bounds.

Familiar Places

While cruising the Ashbury blog I came across these photos. Why are they important? Because they took place at our very own BYU STADIUM RAIL. A mere mortal would not have spotted the secluded site, but with these superhuman spotting skills it was rather obvious. The drop in is infamous, the gate around the stadium is unique, and the sight of Brigham Young's finest officers is anything but rare.

It's good to know that Ashbury and the Sodas are the center part of that Venn Diagram, you know the part that is in common.

WHEN IT RAINS, IT POURS

The East (Ice) Coast right now is dumping...dumping rain. After feet of snow in the early season, the Mid-Atlantic region is slowing down. Infamous for it's freezing rain and bullet-proof snow, the East Coast is a very different ski culture than the West. While sitting on Chair #3 (they don't name lifts in the East) in the pouring rain I tried to think of a few differences between my East Coast roots and my West Coast home. Here are just a few...

1. What is a pow day?

Most Western riders won't even blink if new snow totals are less than 6 inches. Here on the East Coast anything goes. Even if its 3 inches of ice, it's time to take off work and go ride, it's a pow day.

2. Ski Blades

Some fads never die. Out here (I'm on my temporary hiatus in the East) the ski blade is alive and well. Normally seen with spiked hats, these rebels will never have a cause.

3. Who is your favorite football team?
Being between Steeler territory and Redskin land, this heated rivalry is taken to the slopes.  Burton, Sessions, Holden, and 686 are unheard of.  So if your coming out here to ride, go to your closet, dust off your Starter, and rep your local football team.

4. Night Skiing
Who would ski during the day when you can ski at night? (Leprechauns only ski in Boston)

5. Awesome Headwear
Neff has nothing on the East Coast style.

Even with all of it's oddities, the riders on the Ice Coast love snowboarding and love life.  They love their snow, and are appreciative of whatever snow they get during the winter.  So next time you wake up and see there is only 3 new inches of snow, remember the East Coasters, get out of bed, and take a few turns for them.

Seasons Greatings From SNL

Just found a little SNL skit that I wanted to share this Christmas Season. When you get your socks from your Aunt or sweater from your Grandma, remember it could be worse. Enjoy. Oh and a little North West shred session coming soon so stay posted.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Now go snowboard! This picture will forever baffle me. If anyone knows what happened after this was shot, please let me know.

History Lesson: Tarquin Robbins

I sometimes feel like I came onto the snowboard scene late in life.  I grew up riding with mostly skiers, so our yearly hype video wasn't Mack Dawg, it was Warren Miller. When I saw Chulksmack it was like finding out I'd been eating cardboard pieces when there was delicious Oat Nut Wheat Bread available on the next aisle over.

One rider who kills it WITH ATTITUDE is Tarquin Robbins.  His wheat bread was all oaty and nutty long before MFM was blessing us with his steezy goodness  Its rad to see how much all the technine guys are still following his style lead 10 years later.  Watch this video, then watch the MFM/Chris Bradshaw video under it to see what I mean.  STEEZE IT LIKE TARQUIN ROBBINS.

What chu know bout wheat bread?

CO SNOW

It's been a few snowy days here in CO. Once again armed with my Canon Powershot, and iMovie I threw together a short edit of the snow out here. Once again, if your not dizzy, your not watching close enough. Enjoy...(or at least try to)

Jeremy Jones: Killing it since '76.

Jeremy Jones is a Utah native and current resident of Sandy, UT. I came to admire his steezy flare when The Resistance dropped September 9, 2000. He's old, has kids, and pulls off the facial hair, hippie long hair rather well. If he had a motto it would probably be "tight pants are for fags."

This video is edgy attitude.

SIDEWALK SLIDIN'

Urban Rally from BadBoySodas.com on Vimeo.

SSS SO SICK

Via Jacob and his intense driving abilities, we made it up to the super secret spot.  This spot consists of bike jumps during the summer, but not that snow has fallen it is a mini snowboard park.  With the snow a little too powdery and no base below we decided to still hit some of the smaller hits, but as the base builds we will show some of the bigger drops and jumps.   Onto the pictorials...Fat kids never go as high.
Austin isn't fat.
Mike either.
Riding back down from the SSS.
There was a cake party when we made it back down. I heart cake.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight.

KIWANIS PARK, PARK CREW

Finally Provo has snow in the valley, so we decided to make the most of it. After a few phone calls and some ideas from Jacob, the Sodas and others took it to the streets (not really I just wanted to say that). After a few minutes of pushing snow, we had a down rail then a picnic table set-up. Thanks to everyone for helping set up it was a lot of fun. Enough of my rambling...to the pics.
The man with the plan, Jacob on generator.
Mike on lockdown.
Austin nosepresser.

SNOW MISER

Ok ladies and gentlemen, this last weekend's storm brought us some much needed snow and cold arctic air.  The 4 to 5 inches of snow that fell over the weekend will hopefully stick around for good this time. Today the high was about only 28, so that means no snow melt overnight that will freeze to hard ice, so Monday and Tuesday should be a great days.  Keep on cutting a rug with those snow dances cause we still need a lot more. If you're coming up and you really want to know how the weather is just give me a call and I will let you know.

Monday: Snow likely, mainly after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. Southeast wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Monday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 8. Southeast wind 9 to 11 mph becoming southwest. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 24. West wind around 9 mph.

Tuesday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 9. West wind around 9 mph becoming east southeast.

Wednesday: A 40 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 24.

BONANZA OPENING ON SAT!

The Bonanza lift will be opening on Saturday with Homerun opening from top-to-bottom. Homerun is a lot of fun with side hits and rollers all the way down the 3.5 mile ride to the base. Hopefully, with some storm systems moving in, we will get some more snow and Park City will be able to open a few more runs before the Christmas Break madness. Bonanza (commonly known as bananers to the Sodas) is the lift that covers Jonesy's terrain park and works as access to Jupiter, Thaynes, and the forbidden tree jibs (RIP Bryce Cline's hip, but don't worry skirts his hip is still fully functional). Here's a little vid to get you stoked for Bonanza's opening. Just a little south of Virginia City, you will find the Ponderosa, that's where these guys ride with attitude.

Shredder training

It's never too early to the art of snow dancing on a shred stick. Where would snowboarding be without too-talls? Why can't shirts be that long on me?

A December 6 For the Ages

This December 6th went down as one of the greats in history. It shares honors with other significant December 6th events like...Harriett Tubman escaping slavery December 6, 1849, Finland's independence from Russia in 1917, and the first Encyclopædia Britannica was published December 6, 1768.

Jack.

First 'tip-touch' of the season.

TCJ actually bulldozed a dude on skis. Our camera crew wasn't shooting then but it was epic. Butter nose tweak to stalefish picnic table. Notice he's riding with ATTITUDE, it's the newest trend.

Dinobots Shots and Goggles Free Download

If Jurrasic Park taught me one thing, its that overweight guys are sneaky.

If it taught me two things it would be
1. Overweight guys are sneaky
2. Dinosaurs love snowboarding.

A group of Dinobots sure to be featured in Jurrasic Park 4: Escape to "Straight to DVD" Island, recently decided to infiltrate our mountains and filmed a movie.  For some sneaky reason, they are offering a free download of their movie entitled, "Shots and Goggles".

Have I watched it?  No.

Will I watch it?  Maybe.  Afterall, it is free.

I prefer to imagine the entire movie looks something like this....

If you prefer watching the real movie here's part of it

And if you'd like to download it for free, cruise on over to Dinosnow.com

A Season's Birth

For many proud souls, Nov 23 was opening day. Brighton encouraged a friendly atmosphere of school spirit. There were some fights, stabbings, shankings, shivings, bantering, and passive aggressive confrontations between the Low life Utah fans and the Humble yet good hearted and overall better BYU fans. In the end, we all paid $22.50 to ride on a huge sheet of ice (except for snake creek run) and it was worth every $22.50 of it. As expected the uphill park displayed the constant stoned park crew vigilance of making features fit for a slave. It all couldn't have been more fun though.
